  • Violated the Test Act
  • Appointed Catholic officials to important positions
  • Challenged in court
  • Was declared not guilty; he chose the judges

  • Religious freedom
  • Thought it was a good thing and could make him popular
  • Dethroning
  • Parliament wanted to prevent Catholic Absolutism
  • He and his wife fled to France, leaving the throne to Mary and William

AFTERMATH

  • Glorious Revolution-nonviolent overthrow of James II
  • The idea of Divine Right was destroyed
  • In favor of representation in Parliament
  • After 1688
  • King split power with Parliament, ruling with the people's consent

ENGLISH BILL OF RIGHTS

  • Created in opposition of Stuart absolutism
  • Law as made only by parliament
  • Once passed, law couldn't be suspended by the monarch
  • Parliament had to be called at least once every 3 years
  • Court system was independent

  • Protestants could own weapons, Catholics couldn't
  • No Catholics could inherit the throne
  • Freedom of worship given to Protestants but not Catholics

  • Political Philosopher
  • Wrote Second Treatise on Civil Government
  • Thought people had the right to overthrow a tyrannical ruler
  • Thought the ruler's job was to protect the natural rights of the people
  • If the ruler failed, the people had a right to rebel

ENGLAND- 1689

  • Did not have a full democracy
  • Parliament only represented wealthy men

DAVID HUME

  • Preferred absolute monarchy
  • Thought absolutism gave stability
  • Thought Cromwell and Republicanism caused chaos
