The war of 1812 was kind of a lost in James Madison's presidency.
1) No funds to support the war.
2)In August 1814 British troops marched into Washington, D.C., and burned the Executive Mansion, the Capitol, and several other government buildings.

Retirement
1)Madison retired to Montpelier in 1817.
2)He supported Jefferson in founding the University of Virginia.
3)He also worked to end slavery. 4) Madison died on June 28, 1836.
