BIOGRAPHY

EARLY LIFE

  • Born in Greenock, Scotland on January 18, 1736
  • Enjoyed studying mathematics in school
  • Learned carpentry from his father

CAREER

  • In 1754, James went to Glasgow and became acquainted with Robert Dick
  • Dick encouraged Watt to go to London for special training

CAREER CONTINUED

  • In London, John Morgan took Watt as an apprentice instrument maker for one year
  • Watt worked hard and showed amazing results

  • After retuning to Glasgow, he opened his own workshop
  • By 1763 he had many apprentices

STEAM ENGINE

NEWCOMEN'S ENGINE

  • First device to use steam as a source of power
  • Used to pump out water out of mines
  • However, it wasted great amounts of fuel
  • Watt changed and improved it

STEAM ENGINE

  • Watt first started working on it when Newcomen's engine was brought to him for repair
  • He realised that to make engine practical, the cylinder in the center of the engine had to have been as hot as the steam which entered it

SEPERATE CONDENSER

  • After year of working on the engine, he came up with the idea of seperate condenser
  • Steam was condensed in a seperate vessel and the cylinder stayed hot at the same time

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTIOM

  • The steam engine became one of the most important inventions in Industrial Revolution
  • It provided a source of energy for major forms of transportation
