Early Life

  • Born January 19th, 1763.
  • Scottish inventor and engineer.

INTERESTS

  • Liked to take toys apart.
  • He was fascinated by the steaming kettle.
  • He took a liking to mathematics.

When times got rough, he had to pick up the trade.
Watt looked for work in Scotland.

THE ENGINE

  • In 1763, the university he was studying at asked him to repair a Thomas Newcomen steam engine.
  • He realized how poor the design was.

SOLUTIONS

  • Watt became obsessed with trying to refine the engine.
  • He finally came up with an idea but now he was broke!
  • Watt entered a partnership in order to continue his research.

Things are looking up...

  • Watt gets a new business partner: Matthew Boulton.
  • After going into business together, many people begin to buy his engines.
  • Watt even pattented a steam locamotive.

  • James Watt died in 1891 at the age of 83.
  • He died a rich man, retired and devoted to his research.

The improved ENGINE

  • Previously, the engine wasted too much steam.
  • Watt added a separate cooling chamber.

  • The engine made mining more efficient.
  • It made it possible to transport goods and people long distances through mechanical means.
