first OFFICIAL english settlement

founded my John Smith,John Rolfe and 104 english men in a colony of virgina

miles away from THE cheapeake bay

built a fort on a peninsula in the James river about 60

founded to have new land for exploration,

in hope to find lucrative resources like gold and build new industries

jamestown challenges

went through a "starving time period"
located in a marshy area
many colonist died of disease
constant welfare with native americans
shortage on money

jamestown started being SUCCESSFUL when they started

growing tabacco and were able to increase

first REPRESENTATIVE government in 1619 and

first import of african american slaves into the colonies
