JAMESTOWN (FACTS)
Jamestown was the first permanent english settlement in North America.
Jamestown was founded in 1607.
The colonists came to North America to find gold and power.
The Jamestown fort was right next to the James River named after King James

Africans came to Jamestown in 1619.
The English were afraid of a spanish attack.
Jamestown was not attacked by Spanish but was attacked by the Indians.
A girl named Pocahontas was a peacemaker between the English and Indians.

HARDSHIPS OF JAMESTOWN
Most of the water was salty and unsafe to drink.
There were mosquitoes that carried diseases like malaria.
The diseases weakened settlers.
They arrived in the middle of the worst droughts in 700 years.
Most settlers lacked the skills to provide themselves.

COMING FROM ENGLAND
The ships the colonists came on were the Godspeed the Discovery and the Susan Constant
The colonists left on December 19, 1606
When they left Europe they island hopped first they stopped at the Canary Islands and then the West Indies and then they finally got to North America.
104 men and boys were aboard the three ships.
There were well to do gentleman ,soldiers,laborer,and three young orphans.

THE THREE CHARTERS
The three charters were given to the Virginia company to start a settlement in North America
They gave the Virginia company three ships lots or workers and supplies to build the settlement.
The land given to Va company was 50 miles north and south an 100 miles in land
The next royal charter was made in 1609 it extended Va to cover all North America
And the last charter gave Va a island to the east.

THE CASH CROP
Tobacco is also known as the cash crop
The settlers made many tobacco farms
The settlers sold tobacco to England to smoke tobacco.
The English thought smoking tobacco was good for you
Tobacco farmers used tobacco as money to help pay for goods.
