GEOGRAPHY

  • Only 20 percent of the land is flat in japan.
  • They had to rely on the sea for food.

ART IN JAPAN

  • Nobles liked to wear elaborate outfits.
  • Women wore long gowns with 12 layers of silk that was cut to show many layers at once.
  • Painting, calligraphy, and architecture were popular during this period.

MILITARY SOCIETY

  • Peasants were the lowest class.
  • Smamurai and Daimyo and samurai were second to last.
  • Shogun was second to first, but they have more power than the emperor.
  • Emperor is the highest, but actually he was being used as a figurehead.
  • If someone disrespected a samurai could be killed.

SAMURAI

  • Their name means to serve.
  • Both men and women learned to fight.
  • The women protected their homes from robbers.
  • The samurai code was called a bushido.

INVASIONS

  • One of the best invaders against the Japanese were the Mongols.
  • The mongols attacked again but a huge storm saved them 2.

VOCABULARY SECTION 1

  • Clans: extended families.
  • Shinto: traditional religion of Japan.
  • Prince Shotoku: served from 593 to 621 as a regent
  • Regent: a person who rules from someone else.

VOCABULARY SECTION 2

  • Court: a group of nobles who live near and serve the ruler.
  • Lady Murasaki Shikibu: one of the greatest writers in Japan.
  • Zen: Popular form of Buddhism.

VOCABULARY SECTION 3.

  • Daimyo: Japan's large land owners.
  • Samurai:trained professional warriors.
  • Figurehead: a person who appears to rule even though the real power rests with someone else
