WHAT'S HAPPENING?

  • Fishermen are overfishing
  • Many fish species are endangered
  • Destruction of marine habitats
-Japan has been overfishing because of the increasingly high demand for seafood.
-Many different fish species' numbers are going down mainly because fishermen are catching fish that are premature and haven't been able to reproduce.
-Another cause for species' numbers to decrease is the nuclear accident in March 2011. This also caused damage to the fishing industry. Many animals were killed and some were contaminated and unsafe to eat.
-Many boats and fishing machines have destroyed where many fish live. Including seagrass beds.

WHAT CAUSED THIS?

  • Lack of protected areas
  • Open access fisheries
  • Illegal fishing
-There aren't enough preserved areas where there are very important and endangered species.
-Open access fisheries are areas that basically have no restrictions.
-Many fishermen are fishing in areas that are not allowed.

WHAT PART OF JAPAN IS BEING MOST AFFECTED?

  • Coastal areas
  • Pacific ocean
  • Fish markets
-Parts of the country that touch the Pacific Ocean and where fisheries are located.
-The Pacific Ocean is affected because more fish are becoming endangered.
-The fish markets are being affected because people have lost some of there trust in the seafood after the the nuclear accident.

HOW IS JAPAN RESPONDING?

  • The Fisheries Agency is tightening quotas
  • The Agency also cut the allowable haul of Pacific immature bluefin tuna by 50%
  • The government is trying get people to agree
-The cut will remain for 10 years.
-The Fisheries Agency has divided Japan into 6 fishing regions and, depending on their past catches, each region has a set catch limit.
-The government wants people to agree to these new limitations to save the fish and their environment.
