JAPANESE AND JEWISH CAMPS

Japanese Interment camps were established because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, many Americans worried that citizens of Japanese ancestry would act as spies for the Japanese government. Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a treaty Executive Order 9066 to relocate all Japanese Americans.

Jewish concentration camps were started because Adolf Hitler ( the leader of the Nazi Party ) said that most of Germany's problems were caused by Jews. Most people believed it and locked Jews up in the camps.

WHAT ARE SOME SIMILARITIES?

  • Both occured in the 1900's.
  • Both treated people under harsh conditions.
  • Both took place during World War ||.
  • Both had large groups of people imprisoned.
  • Both were based on unfair prejudice.

JAPANESE INTERNMENT

  • Imprisoned people from 1942-1946
  • Over 127,000 Japanese citizens were imprisoned.
  • Many families were forced to sell their houses.
  • Adults had the choice of working for a salary of $5 per day or not earning any money at all.
  • In 1988, the congress tried to apologize by giving each evacuee $20,000. and an apology letter.

JEWISH CONCENTRATION

  • Imprisoned people from 1933-1945
  • Many millions were held against their will.
  • Adolf Hitler was the mastermind of the camps.
  • German authorities established camps all over Germany.
  • The camps were started in Germany and eventually spread all through Europe.

How can we stop this from happening again?
We can stop this from happening again by avoiding discrimination and prejudice and by teaching children tolerance and how to accept other peoples differences.
