JAVELINA

CHARACTERISTICS!

  • The average adult stands about 18 inches tall.
  • They have brown fur that has lighter hairs on it.
  • Looks like a small pig but has shorter legs than a hog.

RANGE

  • Javelinas can be found in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico.

DIET

  • They eat cacti, mesquite beans, Sotol, and Forbs.

Lifespan

  • Wild javelina can live to be over ten years.
  • Captive javelina can live to be over twenty years.

Mating season

  • If conditions and food are good they may begin breeding at eleven months of age.
  • The gestation period is usually about 145 days.

Behavior

  • Javelina are nocturnal.
  • They have a scent gland on there backs and other members of the herd will rub against it to identify each other.
