The way Spielberg approached the story works so good because it is so scary, the way we don't see the shark, the shots of the water accompanied with iconic music to create suspense.
To contrast that, the story and the likable characters give the ending such satisfaction.

I personally like the movie better because I thought a lot of the context in the book was irrelevant. The best thing about the movie is the way it plays with your emotions.
