EXPRESSING BELIEFS

RELIGION IS WHAT PEOPLE BELIEVE ABOUT GOD OR GODS, AND HOW THEY WORSHIP.

5 MAJOR WORLD RELIGIONS

  • Christianity
  • Buddhism
  • Hinduism
  • Judiasm
  • Islam
There are many different religions found all over the world today. In the past Christianity was the main religion in Ireland. However, times have changed and today Ireland is home to people of many different religions and cultures.

Having an understanding of the key religious beliefs of others helps us to respect the role religion plays in their lives. Even if we don’t have a religious belief ourselves, we can still learn about other’s beliefs, e.g. I might not play rugby, but I can still learn the rules and appreciate why other people enjoy playing it.

KEY RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

  • Buddhism began in the north of India c. 5th Century BCE.
  • Founded by a man named Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Buddha. (Son of a rich king and queen)
He was searching for answers to his questions about life. One day he was meditating under a tree when he felt enlightened. He believed that people were never happy with what they had and this caused them suffering.

He left the palace to see the real world.
He saw an old man, a sick man and a dead man.
Realization: life is full of suffering.
Met a monk who owned nothing but was happy and content.
Began a life of prayer and fasting.

Blesses are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
