  • Birth: June 3, 1808. Fairview, KY
  • Death: December 6, 1889
  • Spouse:Varina Davis, Sarah Knox Taylor.

KNOWN FOR

  • Mexican War hero
  • U.S. senator from Mississippi
  • U.S. Secretary of War
  • President of the Confederate States of America

ROLE IN THE CIVIL WAR

  • On February 1861 Alabama selected Jefferson Finis Davis to become the President of the Confederacy. He would be expected to serve for a six year term.
  • Davis did not want this job, as he was instead hoping for a military command.
  • Jefferson Davis was forced to flee on April 2, 1865. On May 10, 1865 he was captured by Northern soldiers near Irwinville, Georgia.

AFTER THE WAR

  • Jefferson Davis was imprisoned at Fort Monroe, Virginia for two years.
  • Davis struggled to make a living and lived off of charity and friends.
  • Jefferson Finis Davis finally died in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 6, 1889.
