JEWISH HOLY DAYS

THESE ARE ONLY SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT ONES

Many Jewish holy days don't occur on the same day each year because the Jews have a different calendar.

SHABBAT

  • This holy day occurs once a week.
  • Day of rest
  • Remember the creation of Heaven and Earth
  • Begins before sunset on fri.; ends night on sat.
  • Two candles, challah, and sweet wine

PASSOVER

  • Happens in April for 7/8 days
  • To celebrate the escape from slavery in Egypt
  • No foods with leavening are to be eaten

ROSH HOSHANA

  • Happens in Sep./Oct. for 2 days
  • To celebrate the new year
  • Plan changes for the new year
  • No work
  • Synagogue services as shofar is blown

YOM KIPPUR

  • Happens in Sept./Oct. for 25 hours
  • To make amends for sins of the past year
  • No work; pray; fast
  • Synagogue services
  • Apologize for wrongs of past year

HANUKKAH

  • Happens in December for 8/7 days
  • To celebrate religious freedom
  • Light candles each night
  • Eat fried foods
  • Play dreidel; give gifts
