Location:
Cape Lookout lighthouse is located in the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina which is close to Morehead City.{It is on Harkers island}To get to this lighthouse, you have to take a ferry because it is on a barrier island. It is off the Atlantic shores of NC and is on the national seashore preserves. From Wake Forest,it would take about 4 hours to get to the lighthouse.

History:

  • Cape Lookout has changed over many years.Here are some of the important changes.
  • In 1856, the lighthing and reflector system is questioned and the lighthouse board takes action to rebuild the lighthouse..
  • On November 1st, 1859 Cape Lookout's re- model is finished and people can climb!
  • In 1950, the new lighthing system makes it so the lights can be turned on and off which makes it easier to be powered.

~Features and Characteristics~

  • Cape Lookout has a black and white checkered pattern.This pattern is very symmetrical.
  • This lighthouse's light flashing pattern is about every 15 seconds,there is 1 flash around the lighthouse. The light can shine as far as 1 mile off the coast!!
  • The walls on the inside of the lighthouse are brick. The stairs are made of iron and there are 207 steps which is about equal to 12 stories.

Why to visit?

  • Cape Lookout should be visited because of its amazing and beautiful views of the Atlantic Beach. Sometimes, you may be able to see wild horses roaming around the beach or near the lighthouse.
  • Cape Lookout has a very neat checkered black and white diamond pattern. No other lighthouse has the exact pattern as this one.
  • This lighthouse is one of the most striking lighthouses in North Carolina and it can be seen from miles away.

~Interesting Facts~
*For children to be able to climb the lighthouse, they have to be over 40 inches due to strong winds at the top.
*The height of the lighthouse is 163 feet off the ground
*Cape Lookout is open to climb only four times a year.
*Only approximately 240 people are allowed to climb the lighthouse each day.
*Cape lookout was the the 4th lighthouse to be built in North Carolina
