HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

• Jim Crow originated from a show performed by Thomas Rice
• He painted is face black and danced a ridiculous Jig
• He claimed he got the idea from a crippled old black man
• It was claimed to be an offensive gesture

THE JIM CROW LAWS

• Whites are superior to Blacks in all ways
• White and Blacks breding would produce a mongrel race
• Violence is acceptable to keep Blacks in check
• A black male couldn't shake hands with a white male

THE KU KLUX KLAN

• They were strong believers of Jim Crow Laws
• They were a group against black equality

THE 14TH AMMENDMENT

• Blacks were now equal citizens
• Whites must now accept the new laws and treat blacks as equals

THE EMANCIPATION PROCLIMATION

• Lincoln believed all slaves should be freed
• He came up with a plan to get people on board
• His plan didn't work

THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OVERTURNED

• Supreme Court order the civil rights act unconstitutional
• They said it wasn't authorized by amendments 13 and 14

PLESSY VS. FERGUSON

• Homer Plessy was arrested for sitting in the "white" car
• He could have passed as white but by law he was coloured
• His lawyer said this violated his13th and 14th amendments
• The Supreme Court ruled Louisiana segregation statute unconstitutional

• They were denied
• They said it was unconstitutional
