  • "Colored" people can not talk to the superior race "whites"
  • Allowed legal punishments to "colored" people
  • "Separate but equal" was often used to justify the Jim Crow laws
  • Four million "colored" people moved the west to get away from the Jim Crow laws

BLACK CODES

  • Exclusively in the south
  • Harsher than the Jim Crow Laws
  • Made it to where black people can get arrested for almost anything
  • The black codes penalized black people for changing their job
  • Limited access to courts, denied the right to testify against the whites

JIM CROW LAWS

  • Blacks and whites cannot play together
