PRESENTATION OUTLINE

J.J. THOMSON BY CARLEE HERRIN

  • joseph John Thomson
  • Was born in Cheetham Hill England on Dec 18, 1856
  • Studied mathematics at Triniy college
  • Age 28 became a professor of physics
  • His focus was the study of atomics

MAIN FOCUS & STUDIES

  • Discovered the electron in 1897
  • His theory was that the atom was made up of small particles
  • J.J. proved his theory by using the cathode ray tube.

problems

  • the problem with this model was that it consisted of a base of
  • protons on with the elections were enclosed by chance. This model
  • was obviously wrong as it didn't explain the neutrality of an atom nor did it
  • explain why atoms undergo reaction.

MAIN DESIGN

THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN OF J.J THOMSON

EVIDENCE

  • IF GAS IS INTRODUCED INTO THE REGION BETWEENTWO
  • CHANGED PLATES. A CURRENT FLOW CAN BE OBSERVED.
  • SUGGESTING THAT THE ATOMS HAVE BEEN BROKEN DOWN.

New theory

  • charged particles could be
  • deflected in a magnetic
  • field

DIFFERENCEs

  • He thought the rays could be separated but now he says
  • they cant be.

NEW THEORY.
