JOSEPH GLIDDEN

Joseph Glidden is an Illinois farmer who developed a commonplace product that would transform the west and brought an end to the cowboy era.

HIS CHILDHOOD

  • Joseph Glidden was born on 01/18/1813 in Charleston,Sullivan county,NH
  • When he was still an infant his family moved to Orleans county,New York where the remain until 1844.
  • He has one brother Josiah Willard
  • For the rest of childhood he remained in Dekalb county, Illinois

FIRST MARRIAGE

  • In 1837, Joseph marries Clarissa Foster when he 24
  • From their marriage they had two sons Homer and Virgil who died an epidemic in 1843
  • The next year, Clarissa dies during the birth of their third child
  • A few months later the baby dies

BECOMING A FARMER

  • In the year 1841 Joseph owns a small farm and became a Midwest farmer
  • Next year, he buys 600 acre farm
  • You needed railway access to get across his farm
  • He donated 63 acres of land to northern Illinois state national school

SECOND MARRIAGE

  • On October 6,1850 Joseph married to Lucinda Warne
  • A year into their marriage a baby girl was born named Elva Frances Glidden
  • He was married to her for 20 years before he died
  • Lucinda died on October 25,1895

GLIDDEN INVENTION

  • Joseph invented barb wire in 1872 to help his wife keep the livestock from getting into the yard
  • He had a partnership with Isaac l.Elwood and commenced manufacturing in the city of dekalb
  • The started a fencing company in dekalb, Illinois
  • The buisness soon outgrew their faculties in the winter of 1874-1875 they had to an erect into a larger building
  • He became the wealthiest man of the nation

HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Had 4 kids
  • Became a schoolteacher
  • Became a farmer
  • Became a mayor of dekalb,Illinois
  • Became sherif of dekalb,Illinois

ACCOMPLISHMENTS PT 2

  • In 1876, sold his half of the patent to Washburn&Moen manufacturing company for $60,000 and royalties
  • Glidden became one of the richest man in the United States
  • He owned 250,000 acre ranch in Texas , a hotel, bank, and newspaper
  • He invested in the family hotel
