JOHANNES KEPLER

PERSONAL HISTORY

• Born on 27/12/1571
• Born in Weil der Stadt, Holy Roman Empire
• He was a mathematics teacher at a seminary school in Graz, Austria
• He became an assistant to astronomer Tycho Brahe
• Then later the imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II

HIS FAMILY

• His grandfather, Sebald Kepler, had been Lord Mayor of that town
• He had two brothers and one sister
• His father, Heinrich Kepler, had a living as a mercenary
• He left the family when Johannes was five years old
• His mother was a healer and a herbalist who was later tried for witchcraft

HOW HE BECAME INTERESTED

ASTRONOMY

• He was introduced to astronomy at a young age
• He developed a love for it that would span his entire life
• At age nine he saw the great Comet of 1577
• At age nine he also saw the lunar eclipse of in 1580
• After this his love expanded into other fields of research
