PRESENTATION OUTLINE

JOHN: 8

THE WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY

STORY BACKROUND

  • Jesus tells a story of a woman who commits adultery
  • Pharisees and bystanders form a crowd around the woman and tell Jesus she must die by stoning because of Moses' Law (commandments)
  • Jesus tells them that only those who have never sinned are allowed to throw the stones at the woman.
  • At the end of the story, no one picks up the stones and the woman lives.

SYMBOLISM

  • Stoning- symbolizes punishment from God for going against him
  • Jesus writing on ground- goes back to Jeremiah "those who turn against God shall be written in the Earth"

RELATING BACK TO TODAY

  • In the story, the woman is sentenced to be stoned for committing adultery. In reality, this kind of punishment does not really happen.
  • Jesus forgave the woman, and today that is God's attitude towards us when we sin. When we have to confess our sins to God he forgives our sins immediately. God always forgives us even though we don't deserve it.
