  • Born on March 18, 1782 in Abbeville, SC
  • Died march 31, 1850 in Washington D.C.
  • Earned a degree at Yale In 1804
  • Married to floride Bonneau Calhoun and had 10 children

WAR OF 1812

  • John C Calhoun was a war hawk
  • A war hawk is a person who favors war during debates about whether to go into conflict)
  • When British fired on an American ship and kidnapped 4 men this lead to the " Second American Revolution"
  • Calhoun said that he thought the act was unacceptable.

RESULTS OF WAR

  • President Madison was forced to flee White House as British reached DC and burned it down.
  • The Americans just barely held off the British from ruining the new country.
  • The battle at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, is what inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem

INTERESTING FACTS

  • One of John's daughters was married to Thomas Green Clemson, founder of Clemson university
  • Was James Monroe's secretary of war, after leadership in war of 1812
  • His middle name was Caldwell, which is what the C stands for In John C. Calhoun
  • He was mainly responsible for dragging Texas into statehood, which led to the Mexican war.
