WHO WAS JOHN CABOT?

  • Born in 1450
  • Grew up in Venice, Italy
  • In Italy he is known as Giovanni Caboto
  • He dreamed of sailing in the open sea
  • He was a navigator
  • John Cabot was a mapmaker
  • People believed he died in 1498 at 48 years old
  • Married a woman named Mattea
  • Had three sons

WHAT HE DID

  • He claimed land for Great Britain
  • Claimed Canada as a British colony
  • Not a lot is known about his voyages
  • The second time he traveled to Asia, he disappeared
  • He was trying to find Northwest passage to Asia

WHERE DID CABOT EXPLORE?

  • Cabot tried to find the Northwest passage to Asia
  • He explored Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Sailed to North America from Great Britain
  • Cabot's explorations may have been the first of its kind because sailing that far north was dangerous and nobody had really done it

WHEN DID CABOT GO EXPLORING?

  • In 1498, Cabot left Bristol, England with a sailing crew of 300 men.
  • Went exploring in 1496, 1497 and 1498.
  • At the request of King Henry of England, Cabot sailed to Canada in 1497.
  • In 1498, he made another attempt to find the Northwest passage.

WHY DID CABOT GO EXPLORING?

  • John Cabot went exploring because he wanted to find more riches for his country in Asia
  • The British government gave him money to find the Northwest passage to help their trade
  • Cabot wanted to find a shorter trade route to Asia.

WHAT TOOLS DID CABOT USE TO EXPLORE?

  • On these trips he traded Italian goods for eastern spices.
  • Guns were on the ship too.
  • John Cabot travelled on a ship named the Matthew.
  • Beer was their main drink.
  • They also had live animals like cows, goats and pigs.

HOW DID CABOT CHANGE THE WORLD?

  • John Cabot is important because he discovered a brand new fish source for Britain in Newfoundland. This was the 'Grand Banks' off of Newfoundland
  • Many places are named after him in Canada's east such as The Cabot Trail.
  • He claimed new land for Britain.
