ABOUT ROCKEFELLER

  • John was born on July 8, 1839
  • He was first employed as an assistant book keeper.
  • After some time, Rockefeller went into an oil refine company
  • He bought out the company and with Andrews,they formed
  • Rockefeller and Andrews Oil Refine

STANDARD OIL COMPANY

  • In 1870, Rockefeller organized the Standard Oil Company with four partners.
  • By 1872, he had control of nearly all refining companies in Cleveland.
  • Standard Oil was making about 29,000 barrels of oil a day.
  • It even had its own barrel making company.
  • The Standard Oil Trust had an initial capital of $70 million.

FAMILY LIFE

  • He was married to Laura Spelman on September 8, 1864
  • He had 5 children, 4 daughters and 1 son
  • John D. Jr., his son, received the fortune and carried on the oil tradition.
  • The family had two beach homes in which they spent most of their time.
  • The homes were in Lakewood, Cleveland and Ormond Beach, Florida.

LATER IN HIS LIFE

  • Rockefeller always loved giving his money to church and charity.
  • He said "I believe it is every mans right to get all he can and give all he can."
  • Rockefeller also decided it should be someone else's job to do the day-to-day
  • work of running Standard Oil.
  • In 1901, Rockefeller founded what is now Rockefeller University.

THE DEATH OF JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER

  • He died on May 23, 1937 at the age of 97.
  • Rockefeller died in his home in Ormond Beach.
  • He is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland.
