YOUNG JOHN DALTON

  • Born in Cumberland, England in 1766
  • Opened a boarding school at 15 and became principal at 19
  • Started teaching at University in Manchester in 1793
  • Wrote famous color blindness paper in 1794

IMPORTANT DATES

ATOMIC THEORY

  • Elements are made of extremely small particles called atoms
  • Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and other properties; atoms of different elements differ in these aspects
  • Atoms cannot be divided, created, or destroyed.
  • Atoms of different elements combine in simple ratios to form compounds
  • In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or rearranged

EXPERIMENTS

  • Gas: measured how much water vapor air could absorb at different temperatures. This helped develop his Law of Partial Pressures.
  • Combined different gases and concluded the Law of Multiple Proportions- the weights of elements always combine in whole number ratios.

LATER YEARS

  • In 1817, he received the title of president of Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society
  • In 1832, he received a Doctorate of Science from Oxford
  • In 1834, he received a Doctorate of Laws from Edinburgh
  • In 1844, he had his second stroke and died
