Born in Cumberland, England in 1766
Opened a boarding school at 15 and became principal at 19
Started teaching at University in Manchester in 1793
Wrote famous color blindness paper in 1794

Elements are made of extremely small particles called atoms
Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and other properties; atoms of different elements differ in these aspects
Atoms cannot be divided, created, or destroyed.
Atoms of different elements combine in simple ratios to form compounds
In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or rearranged

EXPERIMENTS
Gas: measured how much water vapor air could absorb at different temperatures. This helped develop his Law of Partial Pressures.
Combined different gases and concluded the Law of Multiple Proportions- the weights of elements always combine in whole number ratios.

LATER YEARS
In 1817, he received the title of president of Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society
In 1832, he received a Doctorate of Science from Oxford
In 1834, he received a Doctorate of Laws from Edinburgh
In 1844, he had his second stroke and died
