JOHN DALTON TIMELINE.

  • He was born on September 6, 1766.
  • 1778 Started teaching at the age of 12.
  • 1784 Became principal of the school at 18.
  • 1793 He released his first book over meteorology.
  • 1803 He made the the first chart of atomic weights.

  • 1808 He created the modern atomic theory.
  • 1808 Created the first atomic model (example background)
  • 1822 He turned down membership to the Royal Society.
  • 1832 He begrudgingly accepted honorary Doctorate of science from Oxford
  • 1834 The British government built a statue of him in his home town.

  • 1837 He suffered a stroke that made it hard to speak.
  • He died on July 26, 1844.
  • 1844 Over 40,000 people marched at his funeral procession.

DALTON'S ATOMIC THEORY

  • In 1808 John Dalton created the first accecpted atomic theory.
  • In his theory John Dalton stated that all matter are made of atoms.
  • All atoms are indivisible and indestructible.
  • All the atoms of a given element have identical mass and properties.
  • The statement above was later disproven by the discovery of isotopes.

  • Dalton kept a weather journal from 1787 until the day he died
  • He studied color-blindness, which him and his brother suffer.
  • He created the law of partial pressure.
  • He used the excuse of color-blindness for graduation.
  • He denied most fame and recognition.
