Charles Sanders Peirce

"The Architect of Pragmatism"

Charles S. Peirce

  • Peirce was a physical scientist for 32 years.
  • He viewed philosophy as the philosophy of science. Peirce wanted a theory of inquiry and reasoning to help progress science.
  • Peirce made sure that his views were labeled as pragmaticism, so he was differentiated from pragmatism.

  • Most of his ideas revolved around science, specifically the scientific method.
  • The 3 stages of the scientific method for Peirce were abduction,deduction,and induction.
  • Peirce knew that in science certain problems were crucial and needed to be attended to first.

Peirce's Pragmaticism

  • Peirce's ideas were different than those of William James.
  • The two actually were friends, and they worked together on the major principles of pragmatism.
  • Peirce however did not like the way James thought pragmatism should be used.

William James

  • James was born in New York into a well-to-do family
  • intellect and culture
  • Medical degree from Harvard in 1869.
  • James Believes that his pragmatic truth applied to all aspects of life.
  • pragmatic value only if integrated with other experiencs

John Dewey

  • (1859-1952)
  • The central focus of Dewey's philosophical interests throughout his career was what has been traditionally called "epistemology," or the "theory of knowledge.

  • Dewey’s philosophical interest were inspired William James'.
  • Dewey earned his doctorate at John Hopkins University where Charles S. Peirce was one of his professors.
  • Dewey’s philosophical interest were inspired William James'.

John Dewey

  • Dewey was a strong proponent for progressive educational reform. He believed that education should be based on the principle of learning through doing.
  • In 1894, Dewey and his wife started their own experimental primary school, the University Elementary School, at the University of Chicago.
