Slide Notes

Art Club has been a part of the RSMS community for 15 years. Over time, the handprints of Art Club members can be found on the walls and ceilings of our building, on the windows of businesses and non-profits organizations in the community, and during nearly every play, dance or sporting activity. The message is consistently positive; the work is of the highest quality one could expect from students this age, and members continue to actively seek out the next opportunity to be of service.

our purpose

  • Provide a safe and nurturing space for students to come together around a common passion.
  • Meet the need for learning and sharing art experiences that reaches beyond the school curriculum and class schedules.
  • Encourage a connection to the wider community through service opportunities for the artists of RSMS.

if you love people who love Art
Art Club has demonstrated stability in the number of students served over its 15 years at RSMS. With the addition of Success Period time, the organization has expanded to almost double its after-school population. In the past three years, we have grown to include students from the high school who wish to continue the experiences and relationships begun in middle school. High School membership is somewhat lower in the 2015-16 school years. We look forward to an increase in this number in the future due to the proximity to the High School that will be provided by the new building.

Art Club demonstrates an open door/open heart attitude toward a wide cross-section of the school population, welcoming all for the purpose of building strong and lasting relationships.

Members engage in a wide variety of both student-led and leader-structured art experiences, helping them develop the skills and habitudes of an artist.

if you want to give back
Art Club completes at least one major service project each school year for either the school or community. In 2017, we will be hosting a major art exhibit in the new Middle School building. Club members plan to invite other Fine Arts groups to participate in the event, bringing together music, art, dance, poetry, and drama.

Students regularly engage in sharing knowledge and skills through demonstrations, discussions and displays of personal artistic interests.

Members self-report their satisfaction and concerns through open dialogue, problem-solving sessions, and by retaining membership in the club and recruiting others to join.

We seek out opportunities to showcase the members’ skills through art projects both within the RSMS building and in our surrounding communities

if Thursdays are better with Art
In the 2016-17 school years, Art Club has continued to meet bi-weekly. Officers and members meet more often when special projects are underway. The schedule change allows us to share members with the Gamers’ Club which meets on the alternate weeks. Through the Prime classes, students who might otherwise not have this community or opportunity to engage in art experiences are now being included

Changing the meetings to a longer time period (3:30-5:00pm) on a bi-weekly schedule has been implemented to allow our members who also belong to Gamers’ Club to continue regular attendance at our after-school meetings.

The schedule has resulted in new members who had not previously participated in the program. Club leadership meets on the “off” week for an hour, providing time to develop leadership skills and organize the club’s activities more effectively.

Students who are members of the club have a positive and nurturing community with which to identify. In the middle school years, this is a critical element of developing self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and in helping to avoid those negative influences often targeted toward unaffiliated youth. In addition, the presence of a caring adult in these students’ lives is a district goal of relationship-building well served by this organization.

if you dare and if you dream
In the safety of like-minded peers, Art Club members find their voice. Differences are celebrated and dreams are encouraged. Ideas are lifted up, examined, and pursued with passion.

Together we are better, more fealess, as we learn the joys and resposnibilities of artistic self-expression.

Our young artists are a unique population, often finding themselves excluded from the mainstream for a wide variety of reasons. Few clubs or school-sponsored organizations could boast a more diverse population. If the adage “show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future” holds true, then Art Club offers these students a future of continued passion for artistic expression, lasting relationships, acceptance that goes beyond tolerance for differences, and a strong sense of self-worth. I am certain this organization can boast a strong return on investment.
