JONAH 1-3

Jonah 1-3 Author: Jonah Created: 50 BC
Vocab words
Beseech: to ask someone urgently
Sackcloth: a coarse made from goat's hair worn with burnt ashes of wood as a sign of mourning for personal and natural disaster

HISTORICAL REFERENCES

  • Town Jonah must go to is Ninava
  • Jonah tries to go in boat to hide from God in the sea
  • The people of Ninava try to go away from God

CULTURAL REFERENCES

  • The city of Nineveh's wickedness came before God
  • It was run by a king; a pretty big area too
  • They listened to Jonah's message but went back to their old ways
  • later on they were destroyed

The theme of the story is you can't run away from God. He is always there!

THREE OTHER OCCURRENCES OF THE THEME IN THE BIBLE

  • Adam and Eve thought they could get away with not listeneing to the lord; eating the apple
  • Moses did not listen to the lord and hit the rocks twice for water
  • God wanted Abraham to kill his son to show his loyalty to him
  • He was going to but God was there for him and stopped him

This is very similar to Moses in Exodus 17:6 and Numbers 20:8-12
God told him "tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water" (Numbers 20:8-12) .
They didn't listen to God and tried to go their own way by striking the rock with a stick twice. In the Exodus they did as told but decided not to listen the second time. Striking the rock again instead of standing over it

This passage relates to Jesus Christ because both Jonah and Jesus did not want to go with God's plan but Jesus went through the suffering on the cross while Jonah tried to run away but eventually did God's plan. Both of them you could say suffered for Gods' plans.

JONAH'S MORAL ACTIONS

  • He sacrificed himself to save the people on the boat
  • He then prayed to God asking for forgiveness; God saved him
  • He sent the message God wanted the town of Nineveh to hear
  • Even though he did not want to he did it for God

A modern day situation that Christians would be lead to do a similar moral action as Jonah would be sacrifice. I know many would sacrifice themselves to save their child

THIS PASSAGES GUIDES US TO HEAVENS IN MANY WAYS

  • It teaches us that God is always there
  • This tells us you can not hide from him!
  • It also shows that God is forgiving
  • If we make mistakes he will forgive us
  • So if you want to get into heaven just remember to listen to him
