The Salk polio vaccine had its positives and negatives while disturbed.

Polio Facts

  • viral infection
  • excreted as feces
  • majority never went past sore throat & fever
  • the iron lung was needed in some cases 
  • hit middle class hardest

Salk Vaccine

  • first effective vaccine given to public in 1955
  • safe 
  • made from a killed polio virus
  • inject able vaccine/shot
  • conducted the largest field test for vaccines

Koprowski & Sabin Vaccines

  • both of these were oral vaccines
  • Sabin vaccine confers longer lasting imunnity
  • Sabin vaccine worked in matter of days
  • oral vaccines are cheeper
  • only had to be taken once
