JOSEPH SMITH

  • The rise of the Mormon faith

EARLY LIFE

  • Born on December 23, 1805
  • Grew up on tenant farms in the Northwest
  • No formal education
  • Moved to Palmyra, New York

REVELATION

  • Confused by all the religious denominations, Joseph called on a God for the truth
  • Read James 1:5
  • In the woods he was visited by 2 personages who showed him the truth

BOOK OF MORMON

  • Angel Moroni, last survivor of the Nephites
  • Revealed golden plates on a hillside
  • Joseph unable to translate text for many years
  • Moroni took text back to his planet
  • Published in 1830

BELIEFS

  • Believe Jesus Christ is the savior
  • There is no hell
  • Added text not morally wrong
  • Joseph encouraged polygamy (caused schism)
  • Experience through suffering/Justice by Great lawgiver

PROPHECIES

  • Viewed as scripture
  • Civil war, South Carolina secession, N/S, slavery
  • The word of wisdom
  • Mormon code of health

CHURCH OF THE LATTER-DAY SAINTS

  • Most followers poor or outcasts
  • Smith denied legitimacy of government
  • Hated by surrounding communities for their beliefs and power
  • Mocked from New York ➡️Missouri➡️then to Illinois
  • Nauvoo, Illinois most liberal charter of that day

THE CZAR

  • Smith owned most stores in town
  • Mayor/Justice of the Peace
  • President of the church
  • General of the militia
  • Intentions to become president of the United States

PERSECUTION

  • Anti-Mormons & excommunicated Mormons combined
  • Smith ordered an opposing newspaper to be destroyed and was arrested
  • Found guilty by an anti-Mormon jury
  • Shot by a mob that stormed a poorly protected jail in Carthage, Illinois

THE MOVE WEST

  • Brigham Young moved the Mormons westward, out of danger
  • Near Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Organized their own state that was soon ceded to the U.S.
  • Small knit communities enjoy virtual independence

MORMONISM TODAY

  • LDS church still rapidly growing
  • Have their own youtube channel
  • Leaders of small communities very strict
