  • His dad died when he was 4, and his mom when he was 12.
  • He was home schooled
  • He had 4 kids, 3 sons and 1 daughter, as well as a younger brother.

  • He began to write poems when he was in high school, after a meeting for a secret club he started with his friends.
  • After WWII, he translated Beowulf and began to write The Hobbit.
