BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Was born in Portugal on March 13, 1499.
Died on San Miguel Island, January 3, 1543.
He was in the Spanish conquest in what is now Mexico during 1521.

Antonio de Mendoza, to explore the
Pacific coast north of Mexico (California).

MOTIVES
Sailed to find the Strait of Anian, a mythical
all water route across North America.

ROUTE
He left Navidad, Mexico in June 1542.
Three months later, he landed in San Diego.
Sailed along the coast, and a storm blew his ship
past the Golden Gate.
Anchored on San Miguel Island.

ACCOMPILSHMENTS
Discovered present day California.
Exposed the San Diego Bay.
Found several other bays and inlets.

IMPACTS
Brought the first Europeans to California.
Claimed lands for the Spanish crown.

He built his ships.
In 1519, he was documented as serving
Hernando Cortés.
Married Beatriz Sanchez and had two sons.
He died because he broke his leg and it became infected.
