BORN AND RAISED

  • Born in 1550 in Zacatacas, Mexico
  • Grew up with a family in the coat of arms
  • Family faught in battle of Las Navas de Tolosa

Juan de Oñate's first expedition took place in 1595, this expedition was ordered to take place by King Phillip ll.

Represented Spain in 1598 in his exploration to establish a Spanish colony in northern frontier.

Oñate’s last major expedition went to the west, from New Mexico to the lower valley of the Colorado River in 1604.

The expedition to New Mexico led to Oñate establishing a small town in Santa Fe

After having settled in Santa Fe for a while de Oñate decided to move a little ways east into what is today El Paso.

  • Oñate has a statue named after him in El Paso
  • He also has a school in Santa Fe that they named after him
  • First Governer of Mexico
  • He married Isabel de Tolosa Cortés
  • The statue made for Oñate is the heaviest bronze statue in the whole world
