THE SYMBOL OF JUDAISM

WHERE WAS JUDAISM CREATED

  • Judaism is founded in the Middle East.
  • It was created around 4,000 BC.

Judaism is one of the oldest religions. It all started around 4,000 BC and took place in Israel, which is in the Middle East. The Jews believed in monotheism which is only believing in one God. The founding leader was believed to be Abraham, a poor sheep herder who lived in Mesopotamia. He was called on by God to leave his home in and start a new nation, Israel, by freeing the Jews that where enslaved in Egypt. Also, the Jews believed that God gave Mosses the 10 Commandments.

  • Hanukkah: a Jewish festival of rededicating yourself to Judaism.
  • Rosh Hashanah: the day of Jewish New Year.
  • Day of atonement: the holiest day of the year in Judaism.
  • Passover: an eight day holiday called the festival of Passover.
  • Yom Kippur: a day when people refrain from work, fast, and attend the synagogue.

MAJOR TRADITIONS

  • No pork: they can't eat mixed meat.
  • Bar Mitzvah: happens when a Jewish boy turns 13.
  • Bat Mitzvah: happens when a Jewish girl turns 13
  • Hanukkah: is the lighting of the candles.
  • Rosh Hashanah: they eat round bread which represents a crown and apples dipped in honey
