  • Monotheistic- believe in one god
  • Rambams 13 principles of faith- Existence of the creater, who is perfect in every way, belief in resurrection of the dead
  • 10 commandments- keep the sabbath day holy- sabbath day- day for rest and worship

BOOK OF TEACHINGS

  • Holy Books- Bible (The Old Testament)
  • First five books were called Old Testament, are especially important to Torah

HOLIDAYS Celebrated-HANUKKAH

  • Holiday of celebration
  • Each night a candle is lit on a menorah
  • Gifts are exchanged
  • Lights represent an ancient miracle (Jews had won an important victory)

  • Jewish New Year
  • Means “first of the year”
  • Apples and honey: Jews eat apples dipped in honey on Rosh Hashanah

HOLIDAYS CELEBRATED-SABBATH

  • Celebrated every weekend
  • Starts Friday evening
  • Pray and avoid work until following evening
  • Involve prayer in a synagogue

HOLIDAYS CELEBRATED-YOM KIPPUR

  • Most important Jewish Holiday
  • The day of Atonement (A person tries to make up for bad things they did)
  • Jews gather at a synagogue for a special pray
  • Not supposed to eat or drink during Yom Kippur

RELIGIOUS/FOUNDER LEADERS-ABRAHAM

  • A prophet named Abraham- founders of Judaism
  • worshiped one god
  • Believed to have came from Mesopotamia
  • Believed his god told him to move to Canaan

FOUNDERS/LEADERS-MOSES

  • Prophet named Moses
  • Tried to convince the Egyptian king to release the Israelites from slavery

  • Hanukkah- a well known winter celebration called the Festival of Lights
  • Judaism responsible for a religious revolution based on a single god
  • Contributions include: Music, art, literature, science, and other fields
  • Major influence on western civilization

  • Yom Kippur- the most important Jewish holiday
  • Happened thousand of years ago
  • Ancient Jewish people were lead by Moses from their enslavement
  • New country/nation started by Abraham as called upon God
  • New country/nation called Israel created by Judaism
