JUDIASM

YARMULKES

  • Jewish men wear yarmulkes on their heads
  • Also called a kippah
  • Most Jews cover their heads when they pray
  • They see it as a sign of devotion

WOMEN CLOTHING

  • Women cover their heads with scarves or hats.
  • Sign of respect

JEWISH HOLIDAYS

  • Hanukkah
  • Rosh Hashanah
  • Yom Kippur
  • Passover

PASSOVER

  • One of the most important religious festivals
  • Celebration of the freeing of the children of Israel
  • Celebrations last for 7 or 8 days.
  • The Seder meal is the highlight of Passover
  • They use special plates and utensils.

YOM KIPPUR

  • The Day of Atonement
  • Most sacred and solemn day of the year
  • They do not eat or drink for 25 hours
  • They do not wear perfume or bathe
  • They spend time in the synagogue on this day

SABBATH

  • Jewish holy day
  • Lasts 25 hours (Friday- Saturday)
  • God commanded them to keep the Sabbath holy
  • Often called Shabbat (means rest)
  • Candles are lit and they drink wine.

BELIEFS

  • They believe in one God
  • Bring holiness into every aspect of their lives
  • They keep God's laws
  • Believe that God does not have a body
  • Believe that only God created the universe

ANIMALS

  • They are part of gods creation
  • They should be treated with compassion.
  • Jews are allowed to use them for food and clothing
  • Jews are not allowed to hunt as a sport.
  • They can only eat meat that has been approved

JEWISH FOOD

  • Dietary Laws influence recipes
  • Some foods associated with certain holidays
  • Challah is special bread used for the Sabbath
  • A knish is a type of stuffed dumpling

WEDDING RITES

  • Bride and groom fast
  • Wedding ceremony must be under a rabbi's supervision
  • Special ceremony before wedding called ufruf.
  • Wedding Ceremony ends with breaking of a glass by the groom
  • Weddings take place in a synongugue.
