JUDY GARLAND: A LEGENDARY STAR OF THE STAGE AND SCREEN

FRANCES ETHEL GUMM

  • Born June 10th, 1922 into a family of performers in a small town in Minnesota
  • Made her stage debut at 30 months old
  • Her family moved to California where Judy and her sisters became known as the "Gumm Sisters"
  • By 1935 she was going by Judy

FAMILY LIFE

  • By the time they moved to Hollywood the Gumm's marriage was crumbling
  • Between auditions, acting classes and the switching of households Judy would tire easily
  • At nine years old, Judy's mother began giving her stimulants to keep her energy up and her weight down
  • In 1936, she was finally signed to MGM studios

THE START OF A CAREER

  • In order to test her skills, Garland was sent to 20th Century Fox
  • She costarred in the film "Pigskin Parade" where she wowed audiences with her voice
  • She recieved many roles when she returned to MGM
  • The one that would change her life and career permanently was Dorothy Gale
  • In 1937, she was cast in the coveted role

THE WIZARD OF OZ

  • One of the most important and difficult roles she would ever play
  • Youngest nember of the cast
  • Often mistreated on set, to the point of being slapped
  • Self esteem was also damage

JUDY THE MOVIE STAR

  • From the premiere in 1939, Judy was an instant star
  • In 1940, she received a special Academy Award for her work
  • She was officially contracted with MGM

FILM CAREER

  • In 1941, Judy married composer David Rose
  • Her drug abuse worsened and her anxiety was becoming more evident
  • The studio, however, finally saw her as an adult
  • She also began abusing alcohol to help her relax and sleep

JUDY AND MICKEY

  • Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were paired at MGM
  • This was the happiest Judy was at any point during her career
  • She loved working with Mickey but hated going hime where her family life was crumbling
  • In 1944 Judy Garland and David Rose separated

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS

  • In the difficulty of 1944, Judy was stilla ble to act in the second most successful film of her caree
  • This movie contained one of her chart topping hits "The Trolley Song"
  • On the set of this movie, she met her second husband Vincente Minelli

JUDY'S SECOND MARRIAGE

  • Judy officially divorced David Rose in 1945
  • In that same year, she married Vincente Minelli
  • She had a great respect for Minelli and his work
  • On March 12, 1946 she gave birth to her first child, future Broadway legend Liza Minelli

THE PIRATE

  • In 1948, Judy starred in "The Pirate" with Gene Kelly
  • This was the establishment of her new onscreen partnership
  • Judy struggled to leave Liza back when she had to work
  • She also had slight post partum depression, which worsened her drug issues

JUDY'S HEALTH

  • By 1949, her health was visibly deteriorating
  • She was still doing films but not at the rate she used to
  • Garland was taking a variety of medications, and her drug issue were solidified
  • She was also growing apart from her husband Vincent

THE END OF AN ERA

  • By 1950, Judy was not the performer she once was
  • She was consistently tardy, never knew her lines, and lacked her once infamous work ethic
  • In 1951, after many suspensions, Judy's contract with MGM studios was terminated
  • This took a huge emotional toll on Judy and heavily affected her home life
  • Despite her deep admiration for him, Judy divorced Minelli in that same year

THE THIRD MARRIAGE

  • In 1952, Judy Garland married Sid Luft
  • Together they had Joey and another future broadway star Lorna
  • These were the last two children that Judy would have

A STAR IS BORN

  • In 1954, Judy starred in A Star is Born
  • This film gave Judy her first of two Oscar nominations
  • It established her place as a decorated Actress
  • Between 1954 and 1961, she did a few films but mainly took a hiatus

JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG

  • In 1961, Judy costarred in a groundbreaking film about the aftermath of the Holocaust
  • It was different from the happy go lucky musicals she had previously starred in
  • Critics took notice and in 1961, she received her second Oscar nomination
  • In 1962, Judy and Sid divorced

MARRIAGE NUMBER FOUR

  • In 1965, Judy married Mark Herron
  • Her film career was virtually over
  • Her addiction issues were at there worst during this time and she was miserable
  • In 1966, they divorced

THE END

  • In 1969, Judy married Mickey Deans
  • Her film career was over but she would make concert appearances
  • She and Deans lived together in London
  • On June 22, 1969 Judy died in London of an accidental drug overdose
  • The drug that killed her Barbiturate with affects of alcohol

JUDY'S LEGACY

  • Judy had a life plagued with issues
  • Despite that, she left a permanent mark on the performing arts
