PRESENTATION OUTLINE
1.
JUPITER
By: Kaila Dawkins
2.
GENERAL FACTS
Largest planet in our Solar System
5th planet from the sun (778,412,020 km away)
10 orbital period
Slow speed, orbits sun in 12 years
A gas giant
3.
GENERAL FACTS (CONT.)
When an object (like the probe) enters its atmosphere,
the frictional forces on the heat shield raises the temp
to 2x hot as the surface of the sun
4.
DISCOVERY
Name: Zeus, came from Greek mythology
Overthrew father (Saturn)
Split universe with Neptune & Pluto
1610, Galileo saw 4 large moons (Galilean moons)
He saw: Io, Castillo, Europa, Ganymede
5.
STRUCTURE/FEATURES
Under atmosphere, there is an ocean
The ocean is made up of H2O
There is nothing in between the ocean and the atmosphere
1,300 earths fit in Jupiter
High amounts of radiation in the rings and some of its moons
6.
STRUCTURE/FEATURES (CONT.)
Atmosphere: mostly hydrogen and helium
50 known moons, 13-17 pending confirmation
Faint rings (about 3). Gossamer, Main, Halo
Rings can only be seen when passed in front of the sun
Lots of storms, lots of colors. Causes Jupiter to appear different colors
7.
STRUCTURE/FEATURES (CONT.)
Tilt of axis: only 3 degrees
Surface temp: -145 degrees C
Core temp: 24,00 degrees F
Jupiter gets about 1/25 sunlight vs. Earth
8.
GREAT RED SPOT/EYE OF JUPITER
The Great Red Spot is a giant storm
Has lasted for hundreds of years
Larger than earth
Fades & brightens due to the intensity
Seen by Galileo
9.
PROBES
Pioneer 10- first mission to Jupiter
Pioneer 11- studied environment around Jupiter/Saturn
Voyager 1- sudied outer solar system
Voyager 2- studied interstellar space
Galileo Spacecraft (p&o)-to see under the clouds
10.
CHARACTERISTICS
If 100x more mass, it is beleived
that it could be a star
Interior: rock, metal, hydrogen compounds
About 7% wider at equater
Looks like marble: storms/colors/solar activity
11.
COOL FACTS
Has stopped several astroids from hitting earth
Auroras, just like earth, but only blue
The shock of the atmosphere deflects solar wind
Auroras are caused by electrically charged particles
Unknown source but thought to come from innermost satellites
