CARDINAL FRANCIS XAVIER NGUYEN VAN THUAN

CARDINAL XAVIER

  • Lived from 17 April 1928 – 16 September 2002
  • In his address 'Experiencing Gods Liberating Power' he says "I will live the present moment and fill it with love.'
  • One quote from the Bible to help explain his message is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

Cardinal Xavier was born in 1928. Growing up he realized that what he wanted to do was preach about the Vietnamese people. In 1941, he joined the Catholic seminary. In 1953 he was ordained a priest. He was then made coadjutor archbishop of Saigon in 1975,. He was arrested and imprisoned by the Communists because of his Catholic faith. He spent 13 years in prison. Nine of these were in solitary confinement. Despite these hardships he found a way to hold a mass in prison for those who were interested. He was released on the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lady. He isn't canonized yet, but the Vietnamese people view him as a saint.

  • Cardinal Xavier's life shows how much Christianity is u I of all people and an instrument used to better all people because he was able to show people that you don't have to be a certain thing or in a certain area in order to recieve God's love and the word.
  • He reminded them that he will always forgive us.
  • He showed that even in a place like prison, God has not forgotten you and what's the best for you.
