PRESENTATION OUTLINE

KaleidoScope Author Talk Back:

Kate Miller reflects on her video, "Sew What?"

Kate reached out to Kaleidoscope with a teaching experience, some photos and video clips, and an interest in making her teaching more public

An initial conversation with KScope staff members helped Kate decide to use video as her medium.

Kate's process began with a brainstorming session--KScope editors helped her see that there was a compelling teacher story in her experience.

KScope editors shared an example video with Kate and encouraged her to begin by building a storyboard to align images with narration

"It was validating to hear someone else's perspective on my story and see the value in it."

Process

  • Asynchronous feedback in Google Docs
  • First take of video
  • Tech support from KScope staff
  • Feedback in a Google Hangout
  • Formal submission to KScope
  • Feedback from reviewers
  • Accepted for publication

Kate's story, from brainstorm to formal acceptance in Kaleidoscope, took about 3 months.

Creating her video story was time consuming and occasionally frustrating. Support from KScope and a goal helped.

After publication...

  • Responses from non-teachers suggest that ideas about "good teaching" might be changing!
  • Positive feedback from teacher colleagues about a clear example of STEAM integration

"I liked the idea of pushing myself out of my comfort zone while making my teaching public & trying to shift the narrative of what teachers actually do."
