What is a Kamikaze? A kamikaze is a member of special corps in Japanese air force charged with suicidal missions of crashing an aircraft with explosives into an enemy target.

Belief of the Kamikazes:
- Dying for Japan is honorable
-Pilots that didn't volunteer for them were considered scared
- Follow Japan's oath:
A Soldier must-
Make loyalty his obligation, propriety his way of life, highly esteem military valor, have a high regard for righteousness, and live a simple life

Designs:
Human Torpedoes-
Ridable submarines used as secret naval weapons. First Human Torpedo was electrically propelled with two crewmen in diving suits.
Japan: No way of escaping once you were in the torpedo
Used to attack ships in enemy harbors.

Kamikaze Planes:
Pilot guided explosive missiles, explosives, bombs, torpedoes and also had extra gas tanks for bigger explosions. Kamikaze Plane is a conventional aircraft and specially designed plane.

- First successful Kamikaze attack
- Battle of Leyte Gulf
- 24 volunteer pilots

November 25, 1944
- Two Kamikazes attacked USS Essex
- Kamikaze exploded mid-ship
- Carrier survived
- Killed 69 crew members

February 21, 1945
- USS Bismarck Sea
- Hit by two Kamikazes
- Carrier exploded and sank
-USS Saratoga sustained damage from another Kamikaze attack the same day.

May 11, 1945
- USS Bunker hill attacked by two Kamikazes
- Crew saved the ship by drastic maneuvers
- Battle of Okinawa

Casualties:
- 7,465 Kamikazes died
- 120 US ships sank/destroyed
- 3,048 allied sailors killed
- 6,205 allied sailors wounded
- 3,500 planes were lost in two months
- Kamikazes caused more allied naval casualties during the war than any other Japanese weapon
