  • kampong glam was named after the gelam tree
  • Sultan Mosque named after Sultan Hussein Kamel
  • Istana was built in 1819 and was rebuilt in 1840

BAJU KURUNG, BAJU MELAYU

MALAY TRADITIONAL CLOTHES (WOMEN)

  • Baju kurung - "enclosed dress"
  • Early baju kurung was longer and looser, now more fitting
  • Loose fitting full length dress consist of skirt and blouse
  • Skirt made from long cloth with foldings on one side
  • Collarless blouse with long sleeves, can extend up to knee length

MALAY TRADITIONAL CLOTHES (WOMEN)

  • Made of silk
  • Modern baju kurung uses lively colours geometric patterns
  • Tudung (headscarf) usually worn by more conservative woman

MALAY TRADITIONAL CLOTHES (MEN)

  • Malay men usually wears a baju melayu (consists of two main parts)
  • 1st main part is the baju (long sleeved shirt with raised stiff collar)
  • 2nd main part is the trousers
  • made out of same fabric (silk,cotton or mixture of polyester and cotton)
  • "Samping"- skirt-type adornment folded around the wearer's waist

MALAY TRADITIONAL CLOTHES (MEN)

  • Songkok - jet black or dark coloured headgear
