WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMONLY ABUSED FORMS?

  • Three classes of prescription drugs most often abused

WHAT TYPE OF USE MAKES THEM ILLEGAL?

  • Drug abuse alters a person's thinking and judgement
  • Leads to health risks, drugged driving & infectious disease

WHY ARE THEY DANGEROUS TO USE?

  • Results (paranoia,hostility,life threatening respiratory depression)
  • Risks(seizures,and decreased heart rate
  • Harm(reduces breathing)

WHY ARE THEY ABUSED?

  • Easily accessible
  • Inexpensive way of altering mental or physical state
  • Some people think prescription is safer than street drugs

WHO MOST COMMONLY ABUSES THEM?

  • Millions of teenagers and young adults
  • 2.7 million teens
  • 6.9 million adults

WHAT ARE THE SHORT-TERM(WHILE USING) EFFECTS?

  • Prescription stimulants- nausea,bizarre behavior etc.
  • Opioids and morphine-drowsiness, slowed breathing etc.

WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS?

  • Stimulants (malnutrition, psychosis, depression)
  • Opioids and morphine(restlessness, insomnia, vomiting)

WHAT PART OF BRAIN AFFECTED? HOW?

  • Opioids
  • act by attaching to proteins called opioid receptors
  • Reduce perception of pain
  • Stimulants
  • Enhance effects of norepinephrine and dopamine

  • 52 million people in the U.S used prescription drugs non-medically
  • 16.2 million Americans over 12, had taken a pain reliever

  • L.A County coroner stated opioids didn't kill him
  • He died from an overdose of propofol
Jackson's drug choice were opioids given to him by doctors repairing scalp injuries he suffered in a fire and during cosmetic procedures to make him look younger. The Los Angeles County coroner stated that opioids did not cause Michael Jackson's death. Michael Jackson's unfortunate death in 2009 was ruled a result of overdose of propofol.
