KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT

Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas is the man behind the act.

He passed the act on May 30, 1854 to officially create the Kansas-Nebraska territories.

He also passed this law to deny the Missouri Compromise of 1820.

His intentions were to create thousands of farms and build the transcontinental railroad through the territories.

But creating the territories led to problems. For example, they had to allow the settlers in the area to vote if they wanted slavery or not.

Voting led to more problems such as, if they voted to be a free state, the rich slave owners would come and buy up the land.

This led to crowds of potential voters surging in and the result was a bloody skirmish.

But from this controversy arose a new Republican Party. This party quickly took over dominant positions and was well recognized.

You might recognize one of their members, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was elected president in 1860.
