A childhood on Ice

  • Michelle Kwan's birthday is July 7th 1980. She was born in Torrance California. Her parents were from Hong Kong. Her brother played hockey and her sister was a figure skater. Michelle wanted to skate too. Michelle was the little sister.

  • Michelle started skating lessons when she was 5. She skated every day and came in frist place in her frist contest!

  • In 1992 Michelle wanted to skate at the senior level.
  • Her coach wanted her to train as a junior.
  • Michelle took the senior test anyway. She passed.Her coach made her work harder.

  • She won!
  • She tried out for the olympics..
  • She did not make the team.
  • She was the backup.

  • Olympic Medalist. Michelle Kwan finished 8th in the 1994 World Championships at the age of 13 and has been a five time World Champion. At her first Olympics in 1998 she won the Silver Medal when she came in second place behind Tara Lipinski. In 2002 she won the Bronze Medal.

Top of the World Skater

  • In 1996 Michelle skated for the U.S. and world titles, and won both.
  • In 1998 she went to the olympics. She wanted a gold medal.
  • She got a silver medal.
  • Michelle kept winning. She won nine U.S. titles, and 5 world titles. She went to the Olympics again in 2002 & won a Bronze Medal. Michelle tried to win a World title again and hurt her hip and leg. She could not go to the Olympics.

Life After Skating

  • Michelle took a break from skating after she had a serious injury. She worked for the U.S. Government, went to college and traveled plus talked about her life. She went to UCLA for one year and then transferred to the University of Denver and graduated from college here!

  • Michelle Kwan is skating today.
  • She has laced up her blades and is back in the rink!
  • Michelle Kwan now is 38.
  • Michelle has worked with people with disabilities.
  • She helped them play sports.
  • She is still known as one of the best figure skaters ever!

  • Bronze. Kind of medal given to the third place finisher at the Olympics
  • Disability. Something that restricts people in what they can do. Usually because of an illness, injury, or a condition present at birth.
  • Gold. Kind of medal given to the first place finisher at the Olympics.
  • Junior. A person in a group with less experience.
  • Olympics. A competition of many sporting events held every four years where the athletes represent the countries they are from.
