The story of the Donner party

The Reed's had a normal life until they decided to go west with their friends, the Donner's. They lived in a big white house in Springfield, Illinois; Patty Reed had a doll named Dolly who was her best friend. Patty's grandma was a real pioneer, and when she heard the news she decided to go with them. They started their journey.

The Reed's spent their first night out with a joyful bonfire; in the morning they proceeded and in about a month they reached the outskirts of Independence. Along the way they end up seeing Indians while they're getting sun bonnets and parasols, but it turned out they were just traders and meant no harm to them.

The Reeds joined up with Colonel Russell's company and had a spectacular bonfire. The Breen family consisted completely of boys except for an infant; the head of the company was an amazing fiddle player. The Reeds and Russell's had a good time before re-entering the treacherous path to California

The Reed's are traveling through long time periods of rain. Grandma had a cough and wished to have some "good old western air", but before that could happen she died and the children were heartbroken.

The Reeds decide to go on A new road not familiar to most people, and Hastings the man who explored the trail, promised to lead them; but when they reached Fort Bridger where they were supposed to meet Hastings, they found he was not there to lead them. They started on the trail anyways and were met with thick vegetation that covered the trail, they started to hack away and finally reached the end of the mountain.

After reaching the end of the mountain the Reed's were met with a large salt desert and a note was left by Mr. Hastings that said it was at least forty miles across. With nothing left to do, they continued on the trail. Deprived of basic necessities, their animals bolted, and with nothing left to pull their wagons they had to leave their belongings behind. Over a dispute Mrs. Reed got whipped and Mr. Reed kills the man who whipped her, and because of this Mr. Reed was banished from the camp. After a long time, they finally reached the end of the salt desert, only to be met with more treacherous problems.

Finally, finished with the Great Salt Desert the Reed's move onto the Sierra Mountains, with at least 8-10 feet of snow, and with no way to move the Reed's had to settle down with the other families, always very hungry and cold. Christmas soon arrives and Mrs. Reed, not wanting her children to starve on this special holiday, slowly saved away scraps of food so they could have a feast. When Mrs. Reed, Puss, and their friends Milt and Eliza attempted to cross the Sierra Mountains they got back starving and frost bitten.

After a couple months a rescue party comes! They can only take a few people though, and the whole Reed family gets picked! Along the way the rescue party says that Patty and Tommy wont make it. Mrs.Reed trusted one of the men to take them back to camp, with the promise another party would come and take the to Sutter's Fort later.

Soon after Patty returned her father came to take her to Sutters Fort! When crossing the mountains Mr. Reed almost dies, because of this Patty refuses to ride on his back. Later Patty starts to claim she is seeing angels, Mr. Reed worry's for his daughter and brings out a piece of bread that saved her life.

Finally, they reached Sutter's Fort and were re-united with the rest of the family. They had made it to California, and were one of the only families that all survived in the Donner party. They were able to lead a normal life, and Patty became a grandma just like her's.
