Geography/ Location

  • inland: Broad plains w/ many small hills
  • coastline: Indian Ocean & swampy area
  • central/western: Kenyan Rift Valley 
  • located: Between Somalia & Tanzania
  • Borders western edge of Lake Victoria

Geographic Influence

  • rural living for 3/4 of Kenyans
  • agriculture is economic backbone
  • 75% of Kenya's workforce have agriculturally related jobs 
  • 20% Kenyan land is suitable for farming; deforestation

Colonialism History

  • 2000 BC Cushitie speaking people from N Africa settled in Kenya 
  • Arab traders on coast established Arab & Persian colonies
  • Shahili was developed when Europeans settled
  • …then British came….

Before colonized

Colonial Rule

  • Colonized by the British in 1895
  • Why? fertile highlands in Kenya attracted European farmers
  • -Gave way to Uganda for Europeans
  • -Uganda=excellent source to Nile River
  • Rule? British followed divide and conquer policy

Colonial Rule

Colonial rule continued

  • Divide and Conquer:
  • -break up large power in order to conquer smaller bits
  • ex: British divided Kenya's languages into ethnic classifications
  • based on their variations and traditional backgrounds
  • -then specific ethnic groups (tribes) were formed

Independence

  • December 12, 1963 Kenya gains independence
  • They were declared a republic on this day
  • Leaders: Jomo Kenyatta- Dec. 1964- Aug. 1978
  • Daniel Arap Moi- Aug. 1978- Dec. 2002
  • Mwai Kibaki- Dec. 2002- present

Modern day conflicts

  • Kenya; very culturally & ethnically diverse 
  • Economy has been recovering from recent yrs 
  • of economic downfall
  • 2011 Kenya military entered Somalia & fought Islam military
  • Since then violence has come back into Kenya

Geographic Facts

  • Capital: Nairobi; Gov: republic; Key leader: Mwai Kibaki
  • Edu: 85% age 15+ can read/write; 90% male 84% female  
  • Infant mortality rate: 54 per 1000 live births
  • Childbirth mortality rate: 400 per 100,000 births
  • Economy: 2011 June-Sept hit by worst drought in years
