He was well known for his training program and his drills. He was liked by many because he took time to train the soldiers, and his use of profanity. He trained the soldiers how to use the bayonet, which was only really used for cooking before this.
Nathan Hale was well known for saying, "I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country." He said this while being hanged for his crimes against the British Army as a spy. He was gathering information when captured in New York.
Peter Salem was a slave who was given his freedom so he could join the army. He fought in a battle in which he killed British Marine Major John Pitcairn at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He also fought in Saratoga and Stony Point. He was honorably discharged after serving almost five years.
Marquis de Lafayette was a major general of the army. He is known as "the hero of two worlds." He helped win the siege of Yorktown. He was also a key figure in the French Revolution.
Patrick Henry was a politician who led the opposition of the stamp act, and is famous for his "Give me Liberty, or give me Death" speech. He was a founding father, and also helped gain the adoption of the Bill of Rights.
Francis Marion was also known as the swamp fox, due to his ability to evade capture. He is known for his Guerrilla battle strategies.
By the time Benjamin Franklin arrived back home in the colonies, the war had already started, however he was appointed a member of the committee of five, and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Because of gout, he could not attend most of the meetings held, but did make "small but important" changes to the document.
John Paul Jones was the first well known naval fighter in the American Revolution. He hoisted the first U.S. Ensign over a naval vessel.
Mary Ludwig Hayes was the wife of a U.S. Soldier, and served in part of a group led by Martha Washington. It is said that she brought soldiers pitchers of water in the midst of battle, hence the nickname Molly Pitcher. When her husband fell during battle, it is said she took his place at the canon, and used her husbands ramrod.
Samuel Adams was a politician and a founding father. He helped guide the congress towards the Declaration of Independence.
