  • Solid piece of material
  • Forms in the kidney
  • Vary in size and shape
  • Small as sand
  • Big as golf ball

TYPES OF KIDNEY STONES

CALCIUM

  • Most common
  • Calcium build up in kidneys

URIC ACID

  • Forms when too much of acid in urine
  • Eating too much meat, fish, and shellfish

STRUVITE

  • Forms sometimes after kidney infections
8.

CYSTINE

  • Genetic disorder
  • Cystine leaks through kidneys into urine
9.

URINARY TRACT

  • Body's drainage system
  • Removes wastes and extra water
  • Stones get stuck here
10.

URETHRA

  • Tube that drains urine from bladder
  • Stones can get stuck here too

  • Some foods can cause them
  • Genetic
  • Urinary tract infections-can get them later
  • Blockage if urinary tract

HOW TO AVOID KIDNEY STONES

  • Not too much sodium, animal protein, or oxalate
  • 2-3 liters of fluids a day
  • Citrus drinks

  • Blood in urine
  • Sharpe pain in back or lower abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

  • Some stones you can't feel
  • Could be kidney stones or worse

TREATMENT OF KIDNEY STONES

  • If small enough, may not need treatment
  • Depends on what it's made of
  • Treated by doctor or urologist
  • Pain medicines
  • Drinking A LOT to get it to move

SHOCK WAVE TREATMENT

  • Breaks up the stone into small pieces
  • Can then urinate them out
  • Used when stones are damaging the kidney
  • Or when blocking the flow of urine
  • If in A LOT of pain

URETEROSCOPY

  • Long tube to find the stone
  • Goes through urethra and bladder to ureter
  • Can remove it
  • Or break it apart into small pieces
  • Uses laser energy
